What is FSSAI?


FSSAI stands for the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. FSSAI is a statutory body established under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006, a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in India. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India License or Registration is required for any food business in India that manufactures, stores, transports, or distributes food. FSSAI works under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.


Establishment of FSSAI:


The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India was established on 5th September 2008 under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. FSSAI is responsible for setting standards for food so that there is only one body to deal with all issues of consumers, traders, manufacturers, and investors.


Objectives of FSSAI:


The FSSAI is responsible for setting standards for food in India and responsible for protecting and promoting public health through regulating and supervising food safety. FSSAI is also responsible to-

1. Lay down science-based standards for articles on food.

2. Regulate the manufacture, storage, distribution, import, and sale of food.

3. Facilitate the safety of food.

FSSAI also created a GAMA (Grievances Against Misleading Advertisements) portal for complaints regarding misleading claims and advertisements. Headquarters of FSSAI:


The headquarters of FSSAI is situated in New Delhi. The organization also has 6 regional offices located in Delhi, Guwahati, Mumbai, Kolkata, Cochin, and Chennai.


Mission:


The main mission of FSSAI is to set globally benchmarked standards of food and encourage and ensure food businesses to follow these standards and adopt good manufacturing and hygiene practices, and finally enable citizens to eat safely and eat right.

The vision of FSSAI is to build a new India by enabling citizens to have safe and nutritious food so as to prevent disease and lead healthy and happy lives.
